On Tuesday evening the Wife and I curled up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and mentally and emotionally prepared ourselves to watch former Vice President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump have a debate.
In the immediate aftermath, and today, I am reeling. I am at a loss of an intelligible way to describe what it was that I witnessed. Where I would like to attempt to give you some well-thought out commentary, I can only take a deep breath inward, and find that my jaw is agape in frustrated bewilderment.
What ever happened to respect? Where has our ability to listen to or even appreciate an opposing viewpoint?
The notion of respectful dissenting opinion is part of what makes us uniquely American. But on Tuesday evening we cashed in the respect part of the equation.
I have always tried to live my life by "The Golden Rule": treat others how you would like to be treated. What I saw last night I can only describe as "The Brown Rule": treat others like sh*t.
How does one expect to be respected if they don't first show it themselves?
