Look Out: My Son Is A New Driver

Yikes.

Here we are. My son turned 16 last September. He promptly got his Pennsylvania driving learner's permit. Based on his age and current Pennsylvania law, he would be eligible to take his driver's exam in late March.

Then COVID-19 shut everything down.

So here we are in late June - a full three months after he was eligible to sit for the license exam - and he passed on his first try.

I can't remember how my parents reacted when I got my driver's license in 1993 (double-yikes!), but I know that we didn't really make a big deal out of it.

But not today. Today was my son's first step into a larger world of independence. I'm proud of him, and I'm making a big deal out of this occasion.

So, if you see my son out driving around central Pennsylvania give him a shout of congrats. If you see my son out driving around Pennsylvania irresponsibly, give me a shout. This is definitely a time for celebrating independence and maturity.

In other words, I'm not messing around. And he had better not be either.
